Building and Energy Codes
Tips:
Know the codes. Check out your local zoning and building department’s
websites. Before you do any kind of major remodeling or have an
addition put on your home, check your local and state zoning and
building codes. The rule of thumb is if the code requires that obtain a
building permit, make sure you get one before the job begins. If you
get caught without a permit when one is required, not only will the job
be stopped, you may have to tear down and start over. On top of this,
the fines can be pretty steep.
Never hire a contractor that tries to talk you out of obtaining
the proper permits because your told it will save you money. My
experience has shown me that in most cases you will end up with
non-licensed sub-contractors, inferior workmanship and safety issues.
In the long run, it could end up costing you more money.
Many people today are aware of the various building code requirements
in their area but are not familiar with the Model Energy Code
requirements that need to be followed when building a home or new
addition. You can find out more about this in our directory
