I currently have a front door handleset that appears to be a Weslock Colonial 1414 (or matching model). Our front door and handleset are 23 yrs old. We would like to refinish our door and install new hardware. My question is, what can we replace this handleset with that will not require any modification to the door? We would like to "upgrade" to something a little more modern, but we prefer to use the existing bore. Please help!
Steve, I would be glad so help you with this question. As you have said in your question, you have the Weslock Colonial 1414 model handlset that should look similar to the one shown below.
This handleset comes with a 2 3/4" and a 2 3/8" backset. Typically exterior doors use the 2 3/4" backset. The backset is where you measure from the edge of the door to the center of the hole.
It also has a cross bore of 2 1/8" which is the measurement across the hole.
The edge bore is 1" which is the standard edge bore for most handlesets. This is the measurement across the hole.
To help you choose a proper replacement for this handleset, here are the specs for the 1400 series handlesets.
And, here is the cross section of your handlset that will also be helpful in choosing the right replacement for your door.
So now as to what type or brand of handleset you might want to use to update the look of what you have now. There are some really great choices out there. Handlesets.com is one of the best places on the web to find a great looking handleset in a wide range of colors, styles and brands.
You can opt for mid range priced brands equivalent to what you already have like Schlage, Kwickset and Weslock to more upper end brands such as Baldwin and Cifial.
