Answer

Evan, if an amp is designed to produce sound to 5 speakers, as is the case in a 5.1 surround sound system or if the amp is a stereo amp designed to producet sound through 2 speakers, then what happens when you connect 2 speakers to any one of the channels?

In most cases, even though there will be a impedance miss-match, as long as you are doing this equally to both stereo channels, you will most likely notice very little difference in the sound and if you do there would probably be a slight decrease in the volume level.

If I understood your question correctly, then this is what I have experienced in the past. I never really had any problems doing this.

However, you can get auxiliary speaker splitter boxes that allow you to run additional speakers off of one amp, but they would cost  a bit more then a Y-Jack.

I hope this helps.                                                                                                                                                                                         Rick Maselli Founder of Showroom411.com
