I want to replace my balcony stair railing. What would you recommend instead of using all wood?

Answer My home has a beautiful balcony where I love to sit and read. I am tired of looking at the wood spindles on my railing that overlooks the entryway below, and I want something more interesting. I only want to change the spindles because I like the cherry wood banister and posts. Can you please give me some options for changing the spindles other then just wood?

This question was original asked by Sarah P.

For years the main options that people had were to pick out a more interesting wood spindle. Believe me, there are many of them out there. Our site has an entire category devoted to stairs and railings and I would be glad to help you with this.

Even though you have already ruled out wood spindles, it would not hurt for you to explore the many different wood options available, because you may see something different from what you already have that you might like. One thing about wood, especially when it is finished the right way, it can add warmth to any room.

Having said that, one of the best options out there today, believe it or not, are some absolutely beautiful iron spindles, also know as balusters. Making the change to iron, will not only create and entirely different look, but it will also give a whole new feel to the room.

Below are just a few samples of some of the products that are available.

If you are handy and have the right tools, you can probably replace your old spindles with these new iron ones yourself. However, I would make sure that you download instructions from the manufacturers website before you start the project. You will also need to know the exact lengths and any additional parts that you will need. You should also be able to get this information off or their sites as well. Don't be afraid to call them with any questions you have.

Another option is to have your local lumber supplier or iron shop, measure the job up for you, assuring you of getting the right sizes and number of spindles plus any parts that you may need. I highly recommend getting a couple extra spindles to keep on hand it case you ever need to replace one.

This should help you in looking at some great options. You can also check out our Stairways and Stair Parts category to find all types of different options by click on the following link. Stairways and Railings.
