Answer

It wasn't that many years ago when trying to paint over vinyl or rubber products was almost impossible. The reason was because no manufacturer had come up with a product that would work. The idea of vinyl or rubber products was that the color is solid throughout the product and thus, would never need painting.

However, over the years, especially on homes, people got tired of the same color of vinyl siding or new owners wanted to change the color, and this made the paint manufacturers work hard to come up with products that could paint over vinyl or rubber products. It used to be if you painted over vinyl with a standard exterior paint, just a slight scrape would peel the paint right off the surface. Finally, there are paints available now that solve this problem.

Behr, which by the way is probably my favorite paint to work with, does make a paint that will paint over vinyl. Since RubberMaid and similar sheds are made of vinyl, then the Behr Plus Ultra Exterior paint should work for you. You can access all of the Behr Products by clicking on the following link.

I would also talk to the paint supplier that you purchase the paint from about which primer would be best for the job. You always want to apply a good primer, and one that would be able to be used with vinyl, so that you will get the best adherence of the paint. This will insure that your paint will last for many years. Behr also makes primers and in some cases the paint itself can be used as a primer. You can purchase Behr paints at the Home Depot stores.

Behr, is not the only company that makes these type of paints, you can also try Sherwin Williams and other major paint manufacturers as well.

Another thing to take into consideration is making sure the surface is clean, free of any oil or grease etc, prior to painting. Preparation can go a long way in helping you to achieve a long lasting beautiful finish.
